A momentous part of the war.
Where both faction's commanders were cutoff from the front for several weeks. All this time, 'ace's fought at every inch. Until there was only a few hundred left on the planet. Mostly veterans who had lived more lives than most, or special forces who were better trained than most.
After a lull in the gunfire, one soldier had a breakdown. "what are you fighting for!!!" he called out. "The defence of earth"someone replied. "The prevention of human annihilation!!" exclaimed another.
"So are we you fucker!!!" replied the original questioner.
This was a shock to all who had heard. Each and every soldier was protecting the human race, defending earth and fighting against their ultimate (individual) enemy. They realised that they had all been brainwashed and manipulated.
Not unlike the christmas truce of 1914, they all left their posts in harmony. Singing their most meaningful songs until they found a 'hostile' soldier with their own rendition of the same tune. Friends were made, barriers were broken and relationships formed.
Surprisingly, without any action being taken, all individuals were systematically reborn at their allocated pods. No explanation given, no mention of the battle.
But, those who had experienced the self imposed truce ... were respected and experienced members of the force. Eventually, some began to mention the battle. Then, by time, the rumour of the truce spread. Until virtually believed in the futility of the war.
A previously small ideology, (of resistance, mutiny and disobedience) took it's hold within the minds of the majority.
